Latest Update (12NOV22):
Well, here's the latest word that I've seen mentioned about this whole debacle and how it played out (I reblogged it from someone onto my own Tumblr page) . https://rbl-m1a2tanker.tumblr.com/post/700754114803597312
Basically, the Opt-Out was something that was apparently always going to be a thing, but the devs needed time to polish it further. However, the dART Twitter people are terrible communicators (ironic considering that's like...their whole job) and even though the devs told them Don't Say It This Way, they did it anyway, and everything blew up.
Now, I freely admit, I do not know how accurate that blog post is, as I'm not part of the DeviantART Discord that they say these conversations took place. Maybe it's false, maybe it's true. However, having been working in IT for 15+ years myself, I can totally see it playing out exactly the way they said it did. And now the dART management have to deal with the fallout from it, as a lot of folks are booking it out the door. I've seen lots of images removed from the :iconSWFC: because people either are archiving everything, or they've deactivated their accounts. Lots of status messages and journals stating that they're going to leave because they don't trust that dART has artist's best interests at heart.
And I don't blame them in the least. I'm highly tempted to not resub my CORE membership when it expires, because I don't feel the value being provided is enough for the amount that's been spent. Especially with how badly features have been rolled out and explained. Little to no transparency, confusing explanations if any are given, a lot of knee-jerk reactions when things get screwed up and generally poor engagement with the very people they need to keep the site going: artists.
I understand it's our society's nature now to fly off the handle about nearly anything and kick up a lot of drama. However, dART keeps inflicting wounds upon itself. They really have themselves to blame, not the users.
Especially in this instance.
Edit (11NOV22): they've set the flag to 'noai' as a default now, and I have confirmed within my own gallery that this is indeed the case. The only question now, is whether this default is in place when you submit NEW works too. If it isn't, I feel that more pushback is needed.
So lots of folks are, deservedly, up in arms over dART's recent AI shenanigans. All of your deviations are currently by default set as approved for use in AI datasets (which gets used in AI generated artwork), and you have to manually Opt-Out of it for each image.
That said, there is away to opt-out for all of your gallery in one shot. Follow these steps:
Go to Account Settings - General - Scroll down to this box:
Click on the box, click Save, and that should be it. You might have to do it a couple times (new feature, probably a little twitchy at the moment).
I will say that it might take it a little while to apply, especially if you have a lot of deviations. So I'm taking the approach of waiting like... a day or two to see if it's applied to my gallery of 927. I'm also considering just cleaning house anyway, but figure I'll make that change after this one. One major change at a time, gallery wise.
